Avalon Station

Background

In July 2022, the Sound Transit Board identified the Medium Tunnel 41st Avenue Station Alternative incorporating refinement to West Entrance that shifts station entrance to 42nd Avenue Southwest as the preferred alternative in the West Seattle Junction segment (including Avalon station). The preferred alternative for the Avalon station is a retained-cut station on the south side of Fauntleroy Way Southwest under Southwest Genesee Street and 35th Avenue Southwest. Note that the Sound Transit Board also requested study of another alternative eliminating the Avalon Station as a cost savings measure. This page provides more detail about the preferred alternative tunnel station. We will continue to study all the station locations analyzed in the Draft EIS as part of the Final EIS, anticipated to be published in mid-2024. The Sound Transit Board will determine the final project to be built after the Final EIS is published.

Previous community feedback and priorities for the Avalon Station area

Consider the station as a gateway to West Seattle with public space, programming, space for art and improved wayfinding.
Create safe walking routes and minimize the number of crossings to reach a station entrance at the complex intersections of Avalon Way Southwest, Fauntleroy Way Southwest, and 35th Avenue Southwest.
Interest in denser development, more retail and housing near the station.
Consider equitable mixed-use development near the station, creating places for all people and providing affordable housing opportunities.
Facilitate easy bus transfers connecting to/from bus routes south of the station.

Avalon Station preferred alternative
